15 Sep BEHIND THE LOOK: Oslo
Adapted from the Tony Award-winning play of the same name, the HBO Original film Oslo is based on a true story of negotiations between implacable enemies — the secret back-channel talks, unlikely friendships and quiet heroics of a small but committed group of Israelis, Palestinians and one Norwegian couple that led to the 1993 Oslo Peace Accords. Directed by Barlett Sherr and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Bartlett Sher, JT Rogers, Marc Platt, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Jared LeBoff, Cambra Overend and Adam Siegel, the Emmy Nominated film is led by Ruth Wilson and Andrew Scott as Mona Juul and Terje Rød-Larsen, the married Norwegian diplomats.
Cinematographer Janusz Kaminski collaborated with Senior Picture Shop Colorist Anthony Raffaele on the DI process for the film. “My experience working on Oslo was different than a normal DI because of COVID, spending several weeks working remotely and refining the grade. Different looks were created to emphasize the different locations, time, and feel for the particular scenes,” said Janusz. “Anthony used his technical and artistic talents to refine and elevate the film’s final grade.”
Anthony comments, “I connected with Janusz after the film was shot in Europe and Croatia. He has a style that includes a lot of atmosphere and creative lighting. One of the challenges of Oslo was creating a uniformed feel which tied the multiple locations and flash back footage together. The way I do this is by creating a “look” that gets applied to the entire film. This acts as our digital film stock but tailored to Janusz’ style. This process maintains continuity and because I work in ACES, the grade reacts similar to all of the different capture mediums.”
The film was shot on ARRI Alexa and the flashback sequences were shot on 16mm, using live grain to give it a unified textural feel. Senior Editor Tif Luckenbill handled the editorial out of Picture Shop’ s New York facility (formerly SIM).
“Janusz’ body of work is incredible,” said Anthony. “He utilizes lighting to create a mood and an atmosphere for each scene. The final shot in Oslo of the empty negotiating table bathed in soft sunbeams from open windows, is a perfect example of achieving perfection of the moment.”
